NBA Tickets – Kobe Remains Most Popular Overall NBA Player; LeBron Second
The MVP trophy will almost certainly go to LeBron James, but nobody sells more jerseys than Kobe Bryant. Aided by the large Los Angeles market, Bryant was once again the number one jersey seller in the league with LeBron’s number 23 finishing in second. Also landing in the top five were Kevin Garnett, Derrick Rose and Dwight Howard. Though jersey sales only tell a small part of a player and team’s overall marketing ability, it does provide a compelling argument for King James to take his throne outside the small Cleveland market.
After his dominant season, not many will argue that there is another player better than LeBron in the league. Still, even with LeBron’s status taking on Jordan-like proportions, he cannot reach the same size of fan base that other players in the league can, even ones far less talented. Garnett is nowhere near the player that he used to be, yet he still remains incredibly popular because he plays in Boston. Rose is a budding star but is not on the short list of great players in the league – at least not yet – and the benefits of him playing in Chicago are seen plainly. LeBron was the only small market player to reach the top five.
This isn’t to say that LeBron is willing to relocate simply because his jersey doesn’t sell as it would in a bigger city, but it’s certainly something to think about. True, LeBron isn’t exactly hurting for money, but he’s also driven to be not just the best player in the league but the biggest entertainer in the league as well, much the same as Jordan was while in his prime. LeBron definitely wants to bring a title home to Cleveland but he also is the type of big-picture thinker that will make leaving Cleveland incredibly enticing. And you know agents and general managers will be pointing to jersey sales as a potential reason for LeBron to move on to greener pastures.
The list was also indicative of the type of popularity that Kevin Durant has, as he reached the top 10 for the first time in his career despite playing in the relatively small Oklahoma City market. Durant, who won his first scoring title in just his third season in the NBA, is only now starting to take off in terms of popularity and should continue to gain prominence as he gains experience. The Thunder also are in great shape to become a powerhouse in the West in the coming years, which will only help Durant’s overall popularity as he solidifies himself as an elite player in the league.
Even with the Heat not being considered a title contender this season, Dwyane Wade still managed to sell the sixth most jerseys, which indicates how big of a deal he is in South Beach. Wade has made it fairly clear, however, that he will only consider staying in Miami if the front office goes out and makes a splash in offseason signings; simply put, Wade can’t do much more with the team than he already has. If the organization wants to continue to sell NBA tickets in bunches and keep selling Wade jerseys by the handful, they clearly need to go out and bring in another prominent player.
More so than football, where players are kept somewhat at a distance from fans due to facemasks and helmets, NBA players are highly visible, which has made the NBA continue to be a player-dominated league. Though jersey sales are a somewhat crude barometer of the overall popularity and success of a player, it’s difficult to argue with the raw numbers. Bryant, Rose and Garnett all seem to be in the perfect place to maximize their ability to reach fan bases and the bottom line is that LeBron is not. If he takes down an NBA title this season in Cleveland, it’s clearly not a stretch for LBJ to head to a different market where his popularity could sell to unimaginable levels.
