Well, The Atlanta Braves Gave It A Good Run
The Atlanta Braves certainly gave a valiant effort, but it looks like they are going to miss out on the playoffs again this year.
The Braves just completed a game against the Marlins and lost 5-4. Marlin’s starter Ricky Nolasco struck out 9 Braves in a row! Yes, that is 9 in a row! He finished with a team record of 16 strikeouts – the most by any major league pitcher in 2 years. What is amazing is that the Braves actually scored any runs at all.
Now the Braves are 3 games behind Colorado with only 5 games left. That means that Colorado just has to win a couple more and they will secure the wildcard. And the Phillies wrapped up the National East race today, so that door into the playoffs is now firmly closed.
The Braves have been on an amazing run since the All Star break. The first half really did them in when they didn’t even play .500 ball. But while the Braves played great in the second half, the Phillies and Colorado just played a little better.
My mind goes back to the first of September when the Braves lost 6 out of 7 games. You just can’t afford any kind of losing streak like that when you are chasing teams. That small streak put them back more than 6 games in the wild card race, and it is amazing that they got close enough to keep their hopes alive until the final 7 games of the season.
Good luck to you in 2010! It will be Bobby Cox’s last year. Sure would be nice to be in the playoffs then!
